how long I worked with Laura: twice a month for three months
topics of our coaching calls: the fundamental principles and challenging anxieties I have as a manager; the way I am in relationships to other people, both professionally and personally; my own balance between striving for achievement and wanting to connect to people important to me.
my experience working with Laura: I look forward to every single call, both simply because it’s a pleasure conversing with Laura as an individual but even more so because every call results in revealing something about myself that I hadn’t known before. I frequently give Laura a hard time about the fact that she never gives answers, only more questions, and that she’s probably more comfortable with awkward silences than anyone else I know. But it’s all part of her mastery–everything I take from our coaching call really sticks and works in my life precisely because Laura has brought it out of my own experiences and thoughts rather than trying to direct things herself.
my own thoughts about coaching: I firmly believe that one-on-one coaching is one of the best investments a person can make, full stop. In so many aspects of my life I don’t need more information or new ideas, I just need to understand myself better and make sense of what I already know. This is what coaching helps me do, and both personally and professionally the helpfulness of coaching is almost always immediately seen.
Sarah Grant, African Programs Staff, Engineers Without Borders Canada
how long I worked with Laura: about one year; usually twice a month; usually by phone
something I’ve explored during my sessions with Laura: As my end date for working with Engineers Without Borders in Ghana approached, I was faced with some big life decisions. I had decided I wanted and likely needed a change. A change mostly of what I was going to value in life over the next few years. I was blessed with several prominent options. I had made extensive pro/con lists. I had been bothered by others’ voices in my head advising me.
Then I spent one hour in a face-to-face session with Laura. She helped me explore these options in a curious and kinesthetic way. As we physically looked at the options through different perspectives, I started to feel a lot better. And a lot more excited about what the future could hold for me.
I remember leaving feeling like a weight had lifted off my shoulders. I realized it wasn’t about the pro-con list, or about what others wanted. It should ultimately be about what I value. It took Laura listening to me, asking me great questions, giving me great assignments, and definitely not bringing her own perspective in, to achieve this. Thanks, Laura!
what I think about coaching: I hope everyone takes the opportunity to see what coaching from a great coach can accomplish!
Trevor Freeman, Green Building Project Associate, Halsall Associates Ltd.
how long I worked with Laura: 4 months, usually once every two weeks, usually by Skype
topics I’ve explored during my sessions with Laura: developing more focus and organization in my work life, integrating my intellectual strengths with my emotional strengths, finding my own unique style of pushing and inspiring growth in others, living according to my values.
my experience working with Laura: Working with Laura has been an excellent experience for me. I valued our conversations and looked forward to each one. I enjoyed how we touched on practical day-to-day things, which helped my productivity and organisation regarding work and life, but also delved into bigger, more substantial topics regarding my values and my approach to people and situations. Laura has an excellent way of guiding as you walk your journey, rather than pushing or pulling you one way or another. More often then not she simply helped me see things that already existed, or that I already knew. Even on tough topics, it is always a positive experience working with Laura.
what I think about coaching: I have come to value coaching a huge amount in my life. The ability to have dialogue with someone smart and dedicated to helping me grow and learn is invaluable. Having time set aside to focus on me, something which doesn’t happen often unless we make time for it, is extremely useful; all the more so when someone else, whom I trust, is involved to ask questions, make observations, and help point me in the right direction from time to time.
Kate Bowers, Leadership Facilitator, University of Toronto
how long I worked with Laura: 9 months, usually every week, mostly by phone and sometimes in person
topics I explored during my sessions with Laura: Seeking more balance in my life between work, school, and the rest of life; exploring confidence; exploring what it means to be more open and honest in my relationships
my experience working with Laura: It was really great to take on these topics through coaching because we took them on as short-term projects, spending some time exploring the issue, finding energetic directions to follow, and creating small and large epiphanies along the way. Rather than always trying to work though an issue alone, or just in my head, coaching was a way to bring it out into the world, explore through writing, brainstorming, creative projects like collages, and really great questioning that pushes my thinking and uncovers new possibility.
what I think about coaching: Of all the ways to commit to yourself – to unlocking more of who you are – coaching seems like one of the best because of the potential it has to affect all aspects of your life – your relationships with others and to yourself, the goals you set and where you draw motivation from, and the way in which you want to conduct yourself in the world.
