Craving Structure: How I Reach My Goals

1 May

I’ve been having wonderful, informative, motivational, and exploratory conversations with my coach. And then I woke up last week and thought, “Enough exploring! We’ve figured out where I’m going and why. Now it’s time to buckle down and do the work.” When I next talked to my coach, I told her it was time to switch from exploring to structuring. (The beautiful thing about the Co-Active Coaching relationship is that the coach follows the client’s need. I, the client, knew I needed to make the change, and my coach supported me and provided me with tips to move into a structure phase).

As a Myers-Briggs off-the-chart J, I rely on structure when it comes to meeting goals. (If you’re interested in Myers-Briggs and other personality assessments, check out my friend Sandy’s site). I like to have my life organized into Excel spreadsheets, give myself gold stars when I go to yoga classes, and rely on to-do lists and my Google calendar.

Those aren’t the only structures that help people reach goals, though. For someone who is less J and more P on the Myers-Briggs spectrum, the structures that help you meet your goals are going to be very different. I’d love to hear from some Perceivers here in the comments – what are the structures you put in place to help you meet your goals? What can a co-active coach do to help a Perceiver work towards his/her goals?

(And remember, in Co-Active Coaching, a SMART goal means specific, measurable, accountable, resonant, and thrilling).
